Rhodes Summer 2007: Embona
This is the "one-room house" with many decorations. A lot of tourists gave the old Greek couple living here gifts from their country. The house is full with photographs from family, friends and visitors. The old Greek couple lives only in this room and they seem to be very happy in their home. You don't need a lot of room to have a happy life...

Rhodes Summer 2007: Embona
The villages of Embona, Kritinia, Agios Isidoros, Monolithos, Sianna and Mandriko belong to the municipality of Attavyros. The municipality is a united part of Rhodes Country since 2nd century b.c. when Rhodes consisted of Lindos, Kameiros and Ialysos. Most of the villages existed since the medieval age when Knights had Rhodes under their occupation. That outcome is due to the fact that there are many epigrapghs that mention Magistre Orsini 1474. The only village that did not exist back then was Embona, which was built later in time from the inhabitants of Kitala in 1474.The people of the specific geographical situation have adapted to their natural surroundings. They are working as farmers, shoe makers, ironmakers and candle makers. They also produce honey and wine or work in the textile factory.
The lady in the photograph above is the wife of a barber. She lives with her husband in a "one-room house".

Empona or Embona(s) (Έμπωνα) is a mountainous village (1250 inhabitants), halfway up the Attavyros, a gray rocky mountain of 1215 m height. On top you'll find a tempel of Zeus. The village is the centre of wine industry on Rhodes and attracts many tourist daytrips. In the second photograph you can see a house built of clay. Every layer of clay needed to dry in the sun, hoping that the clay would dry enough so it would not collapse eventually. No people live in this house anymore.

Rhodes Summer 2007: Embona
Emery, a family owned and operated company was established on Rhodes in 1923. The company is now run by the third generation of the Triantafillou family. The name Emery originates from Emeric D’Amboise of French origin who was the Great Magistrate of Rhodes from 1503-1512. This modern family winery is located in the village of Embona.
Over the years, the name Emery has become synonymous with the utmost respect for taste, tradition and quality wine making. Originally, Emery only produced alcohol. Later they began supplying other businesses with alcohol and by the end of the World War II began producing various fruit distillates. In 1966 Emery began producing wine.

Emery winery.
Greece has 28 Appellations of Origin, two of which are in Rhodes. Specifically:
- RODOS AOC ( Appellation of Controlled Origin)It includes the areas that cultivate the variety white Muscat of the municipalities of Rhodes
- RODOS VQPRD (Appellations of High Quality Origin)It includes two zones, the one of the white grape variety “Athiri” designated between the municipalities and the other is of the red grape Amorgiano that includes the municipalitites Kritinias, Monolithou, Agiou Isidorou, Apollonon, Embonas, Salakou, Mandrikou, Kalavardon, Fanon, Soronis, Theologou, Damatrias and Maritson.
Emery wines are produced by two local grape varieties:
- ATHIRI: The Athiri grape has a bright, golden green color and is small and juicy. Its wine’s, with a fruity and fresh taste, have a soft aroma and vibrant color and caress all the senses. Because of the type of vine and climatic conditions, yield per acre is small. Athiri is by far the most widely planted white variety on the island. Aside from Rhodes it is also cultivated in other parts of Greece such as Santorini and Halkidiki
- AMORGIANO: A rare, red grape grown in the Aegean islands and Crete. A fruity taste, soft aroma and ruby color with violet reflections characterize the rose wines. It is also called Mandelaria and Kountoura Mavri. Brisk intense aromas with a spicy and dark warm red color characterize the reds.
I visited the Emery winery of Embona.
